How the bands were finally rated
As with all competitions, voting has to be deemed fair and proper, and as some questions have been raised by bands, we're only too happy to clarify.
The voting on Last Band Standing, like any competition, has had its fair share of individuals trying to 'manipulate' the vote, some of which have already been disqualified. We have also had bands trying to 'outthink' the voting system, again these bands may be aggrieved that the voting system accounted for this behaviour.
As we stated in our previous news item last month, the final bands are chosen by a combination of; unique votes from fans, unique IP address voters, average score of these, as well as judges' votes. Obviously the importance level of each of these factors were calculated to keep the competition as fair as possible, and the 'top rated' feed on the website was just a cosmetic data feed (this is an automatically generated snapshot of the voting at a point in time, and not taking into account bogus voters and duplicate votes. Basically it's just for fun and not a true representation of unique votes.) Simply speaking, the 'top rated' feed was a rough computer generated feed and not a judging panel.
How does all of this work?
A simple example of one aspect of this system is as follows: If a band has the same 10 people voting every day, after 100 days they would have 1000 votes showing in the 'top rated' feed (although in actual fact there were only 10 unique voters). If a band had one different visitor cast a vote every day for 100 days they would have 100 votes and not appear in the 'top rated' feed (although in reality they had 100 unique voters, much higher than the first band).
One important note is that ALL bands that have entered the competition have been exposed to judges and industry people, and the final 3 bands may not necessarily be the 'one' band that a single record company is looking for. We are still discussing lots of bands that have not made the live event and the competition is still ongoing in a promotional sense. The ongoing effort of Last Band Standing to promote all bands is evident in the article relating to the CD release of the top 16 bands (see article LBS negotiate album release).
In other competitions you may just get a 'goodbye, you remained unsigned!' and that is it. Last Band Standing is at least trying to work in an ongoing way on behalf of lots of bands that have entered, not just the 3 in the final.
Once again, in any competition there are winners and losers and the final standings have to be fair and even.
